Italy in front in Rold Skov after an excellent display of team work. Four of the Azurri-players were under par on the first day

It wasn’t exactly mediterranean weather but the six Italian players didn’t mind the wind and the rain in Rold Skov GC Tuesday and took a well deserved lead in the first round of stroke play at the European Boys Team Championship in Denmark

On a day with sunshine and plenty of scattered showers a lot of the 120 players had their difficulties on the demanding course. Only 12 players managed to break par and the majority of the 120 players signed scorecards with plenty of high numbers. The best individual score came from the Scottish player Sam Maclaren who posted an impressive 68 in the difficult and ever changing weather.

But when it comes to team scoring nobody was able to keep up with the Italians who had an amazing four rounds under par. Team Italy is followed by the reigning world champs Sweden (+3), England (+4) and Norway, who won the European Boys Team Championships last year.

The Danish hosts is currently in 6th place – holding a tight three shot advantage to Holland who sits in the 9th spot – just outside the first flight.

But everything can happen in these strokeplay-qualifications where there is no room for more than one bad score. And especially not when the so called Danish summer weather acts like it did today…
